Bhopal : On World
Meditation Day, Heartfulness announced the Heartfulness Changemaker Award for
Shri Kailash Makwana, Director General of Police, Madhya Pradesh. He is the
first person from the Indian Police Service to receive this award. The award
recognises individuals for compassionate action and service, highlighting
leadership that contributes to a more unified, resilient, and humane society.
Under Shri Makwana’s leadership, the Madhya Pradesh Police has emerged
as a national and global example of how institutional excellence in policing
begins with the mental and emotional wellbeing. Society can be served
effectively only when police personnel themselves are supported, balanced, and
mentally healthy.
Heartfulness meditation was formally introduced into the Madhya Pradesh
Police training curriculum in 2022, making it one of the first Indian states to
incorporate meditation and inner wellbeing practices for police personnel. Recognising
that better policing requires strong inner resources, Shri Makwana championed
Heartfulness as a core wellbeing tool for the force. Police personnel who
adopted the practice reported reduced stress, emotional lightness, improved
emotional regulation on duty, sustained motivation, and the ability to work
with greater calmness and happiness.
In February 2025, a formal Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed
between Shri Kailash Makwana and Revered Daaji, Guide of Heartfulness and
President of Shri Ram Chandra Mission. The MoU laid out a structured and
scalable implementation plan that includes meditation at every police station
with weekly follow-ups, inclusion of police families, coverage of all police
training centres across the state, and authorisation for certified Heartfulness
trainers to conduct meditation training.
As a result, all Madhya Pradesh Police training centres now conduct
daily meditation sessions, with approximately 6,500 recruits meditating
simultaneously each day. On World Meditation Day alone, over 50,000 police
personnel across 2,600 police stations and meditation centres participated in a
collective meditation and pledged to meditate every Sunday at their respective
police stations. This marked an unprecedented and historic moment in incorporating
meditation practice for law enforcement.
Extending the initiative beyond the police force, the Police Training
Directorate has adopted 64 villages across the state. Police trainers are
providing meditation and wellbeing training in these villages, strengthening
trust between the police and local communities. Additionally, when police
instructors conduct sessions in colleges and educational institutions, students
begin to see the police as socially responsible partners and contributors to
community wellbeing, not merely as enforcement authorities.
Revered Daaji, Guide of Heartfulness and President of Shri Ram Chandra
Mission, said,
“To transform one individual is an effort, but to transform an entire police
force creates a ripple effect across society. What Shri Kailash Makwana has
achieved is a shining example of values-based leadership rooted in compassion,
integrity, and equanimity.”
Shri Kailash Makwana, Director General of Police, Madhya Pradesh, said,
“I am honoured to receive the Heartfulness Changemaker Award. I accept it on
behalf of every police officer and family member in Madhya Pradesh who has
embraced inner wellbeing as a way of life. This journey with Heartfulness has
strengthened our training culture, our police stations, and our connection with
communities.”
In addition to in-person training, Heartfulness has developed a mobile
application that enables anyone, anywhere, to access free Heartfulness
meditation sessions at any time. This digital access ensures continuity of
practice for police personnel, families, and communities beyond physical
training environments.
The Madhya Pradesh Police and Heartfulness collaboration is now widely
regarded as a global benchmark for integrating inner wellbeing into law
enforcement. It demonstrates how inner transformation within individuals can
lead to stronger institutions and, ultimately, to harmony and trust in society.
