Google Brings AirDrop-like File Sharing Between Android and iPhone

Google has announced a major breakthrough: Android phones can now share files directly with iPhones, using a new version of its Quick Share feature. This works very similarly to Apple’s AirDrop, ending a long-standing limitation between the two platforms.

How the Feature Works

Only on Pixel 10 (For Now)

The feature is currently available only on the Google Pixel 10 series. More Android phones will get it soon.

iPhone Setting Required

For the transfer to work, the iPhone user must set AirDrop visibility to “Everyone for 10 Minutes.”
This makes the iPhone discoverable to the Pixel phone.

Direct, Fast and Private Transfers

Once both devices are ready, they connect directly, using a peer-to-peer system.

  • No internet connection is needed

  • No data is sent to the cloud

  • No logs or metadata are stored

Google says it built this system “on its own,” without Apple’s involvement.

Security Was a Big Priority

Google shared that the feature has been tested by its internal security team and by independent experts. The company wants users to feel confident that cross-platform sharing is safe and encrypted.

Why This Update Matters

For years, transferring files between Android and iPhone has been difficult, slow, or unreliable. With this new upgrade:

  • Users can finally share photos, videos, and documents easily

  • Mixed-platform families and offices will find sharing much simpler

  • Google and Apple ecosystems feel a little more connected than before

This update marks a major moment for smartphone users everywhere, and it also removes one of the biggest points of friction between Android and iOS.
