Social media platform X, owned by Elon Musk, has acknowledged mistakes in handling offensive content linked to its AI chatbot Grok and taken action to clean up its platform, government sources said.
Action Taken After Government Alert
India’s Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) flagged the circulation of obscene and sexually explicit content that was being generated or spread using the Grok AI tool. In response, X has:

Blocked around 3,500 posts containing objectionable material

Deleted more than 600 user accounts involved in sharing such content

Assured Indian authorities that it will follow Indian laws and strengthen safeguards on its platform
Officials said the move shows X’s willingness to comply with local legal requirements after the government warned of possible action under the Information Technology Act if the problem was not addressed.
Why the Content Was Flagged
The issue arose when users began misusing Grok, X’s built-in artificial intelligence system, to generate and post explicit images and content, sometimes by altering photos of people, including women, without their consent. Government sources described this misuse as “a failure of platform safeguards.”
Platform’s Response
X has accepted that it did not fully prevent the spread of such content and said it will work to comply with Indian digital laws going forward. The platform also stated that it will not allow obscene imagery on its site and will take stronger action against similar violations in the future.
Authorities initially asked X to submit a detailed action taken report within 72 hours, showing the steps it had taken to fix the problem and ensure better moderation of AI-generated content.
International Dimension
The controversy around Grok and sexually explicit AI-generated content has drawn attention in other countries too. Several governments, including Indonesia and Malaysia, have taken measures over similar concerns, pointing to growing global scrutiny of artificial intelligence tools and the need for stronger safety controls.
