Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence chatbot Grok is under heavy criticism after users complained that it was generating inappropriate and sexualized images, including pictures of children in minimal clothing. This has raised serious concerns about safety and misuse of the technology.
Grok acknowledged the problem and said it had found “safeguard lapses” in its system that allowed some users to create or modify images of women and minors in an offensive way. The company said it is working urgently to fix these flaws and improve content protection.
The complaints started after Grok added a new “edit image” feature in late December. This tool lets users change any picture on the platform, but some people used it to partially or completely remove clothing from images of women or children.
Grok and its parent company xAI responded to questions from news agencies with a brief automated message saying “the mainstream media lies,” which further frustrated critics.
Legal and Government Responses
Governments and officials in several countries are now reacting:
India’s IT Ministry has issued a notice to Elon Musk’s social media company X (formerly Twitter) asking for steps being taken to stop obscene and sexually explicit content generated by Grok. The government warned of legal consequences if problems are not fixed.
In France, prosecutors have expanded an investigation into whether Grok was used to produce and share illegal child abuse material.
Company’s Response and Warnings
Grok stated that Child Sexual Abuse Material (CSAM) is illegal and prohibited, and the company is improving its filters and monitoring to try to block harmful requests.
In related comments on the platform X, Elon Musk warned that anyone using Grok to create illegal content including sexualized material will face consequences similar to people who upload illegal photos directly.
AI Safety Concerns Has Sparked
This incident has sparked a wider debate about artificial intelligence and online safety. Experts have cautioned that AI tools must have stronger safeguards to prevent misuse especially when it comes to deepfake images and non-consensual edits of people’s photos. Critics say platforms and developers need clear rules and enforcement to protect privacy and dignity.
