A new film by director SS Rajamouli, starring Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra, has run into a title dispute shortly after its grand launch in Varanasi.
The movie is currently being called “Varanasi”. As per official records of the Telugu Film Producer’s Council, the title “Vaaranasi” has been registered by Rama Bramha Hanuma Creations, led by producer CH Subba Reddy, since 2023.
The production house has also renewed the title registration for another year from June 24, 2025 to July 23, 2026 which means the title is still legally active.
Because of this claim, the makers of Rajamouli’s film may need to either fight the matter legally or change the title. The issue has created unexpected trouble for the big-budget film, which is one of India’s most awaited upcoming projects.
The film was launched with puja ceremonies and a huge crowd in Varanasi. Fans were excited to see Mahesh Babu and Priyanka Chopra team up for the first time, with Rajamouli directing them in what is expected to be a global-scale adventure film.
However, the title dispute has now slowed down the process.
Producers have not given an official statement yet, and it is still unclear how the issue will be resolved.
