SBI Research: India to Become 3rd Largest Economy by 2028 and Upper Middle-Income Country by 2030

India is on a definitive path to structural economic transformation, according to the latest SBI Research report titled "India set to transition to Upper Middle-Income Country by 2030." The report forecasts that India will concurrently achieve the milestone of becoming the world’s third-largest economy by 2028.

Key Highlights of the Report:

  • Rapid Income Transition: While it took India 60 years to transition from a low-income to a lower-middle-income country in 2007, the jump to the 'Upper Middle-Income' bracket is expected by 2030. India’s Per Capita GNI has risen from $90 in 1962 to $2,410 in 2024, showing a significant acceleration in the last two decades.

  • Growth Benchmarks: To reach the high-income status by 2047 (Viksit Bharat), the report estimates that India needs a nominal GDP growth of approximately 11.5% in dollar terms. Under a steady growth scenario of 8.39% CAGR, India’s per capita income could reach $16,584 by 2047.

  • Global Standing: For the decade ended 2024, India remained at the 95th percentile of the global growth distribution. The report compares India's journey with other successful transitions like China and Indonesia, noting that India is now poised for its most significant wealth-creation phase.

  • The 2030 Milestone: By 2030, India is set to cross the World Bank’s threshold for upper-middle-income countries, marking a new era of domestic consumption and economic influence on the global stage.
