At an eye bank, coordinators mobilise. Medical teams carefully recover and preserve the donated corneal tissue. Phone calls are made. Records are checked. Somewhere across India, a patient awaiting a corneal transplant may not even know that a life-changing opportunity has just become available.
Every minute counts
Between the donor and the recipient lies a challenge that medicine alone cannot solve: distance.
For cornea recovered at L V Prasad Eye Institute's Ramayamma International Eye Bank (RIEB) in Hyderabad destined for a recipient linked to the Drushti Daan Eye Bank (DDEB) in Bhubaneswar, distance is one of the biggest challenges in the journey from donation to transplantation. In a country as vast and interconnected as India, the gift of sight often must travel long distances before it can transform a life.
And so begins a journey few people ever see.
The insulated container carrying the donated tissue rarely attracts attention at the airport. It is not announced over the public address system. Fellow passengers do not know it is onboard. To most people, it looks like any other carefully handled shipment.
But what travels inside is unlike any other cargo.
It is the possibility of restored vision.
The possibility that someone living with corneal blindness will once again see the faces of loved ones. That a student can return to the classroom with confidence. That an elderly parent can regain independence. Those everyday moments, so often taken for granted, become visible again.
For eye banks in India, speed and reliability can make all the difference.
Recognising this need, Air India and the Eye Bank Association of India (EBAI) partnered to help transport donated corneas across the airline's domestic network free of charge and with priority handling. The initiative removes logistical hurdles at a critical moment, enabling eye banks to focus on what matters most: ensuring donated corneal tissue reaches recipients in time for sight-restoring transplants.
It is a role that happens largely behind the scenes.
Pilots, airport teams, cargo handlers, eye bank coordinators and medical professionals may never meet the recipient whose life is changed by their efforts. Yet each becomes part of an extraordinary chain of care that begins with eye donation and ends with renewed hope.
