In a recent social media post, Vedanta's Chairman, Anil Agarwal shared a
thought-provoking perspective on what truly builds a nation. Reflecting on the
rise of the United States, he wrote, “Who built America? You will be surprised
– no politician, scientist or intellectual.” Instead, he credited entrepreneurs
who dared to think big and build boldly.
He referenced industrial trailblazers such as Cornelius Vanderbilt,
Andrew Carnegie, John D. Rockefeller, J. P. Morgan and Henry Ford, leaders who
built the backbone of industries like infrastructure, steel, oil, banking and
automobiles. Their ventures grew into enduring institutions that shaped
America’s economic and social fabric. He also highlighted how philanthropy
became a defining part of their legacy, with private wealth helping establish
universities, libraries and hospitals that continue to serve society.
Drawing a parallel with India, Agarwal expressed strong confidence in the
country’s potential, particularly at a time when the government under Prime
Minister Narendra Modi is widely recognised for its dynamism on the global
stage. “I have no doubt that we can do even better. Our natural resources and
human resources are tremendous. The power and potential of our women is
unparalleled,” he noted, underlining India’s inherent strengths.
He further emphasised that achieving this vision calls for an environment
that empowers enterprise, streamlines processes and recognises the contribution
of wealth creators. As he put it, “We must encourage our entrepreneurs, trust
them, give them respect and dignity.” Agarwal maintained that when dynamic
entrepreneurship is paired with a strong philanthropic mindset, supported by
the government and valued by society- it can propel India to become the world’s
leading nation.
