Shivakumar vs. Siddaramaiah: What

What’s going on in Karnataka Congress

Karnataka is witnessing a sharp internal struggle within the Congress party. Around 10 MLAs loyal to Shivakumar have flown to Delhi, demanding a change in the leadership they want Shivakumar to replace Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister.

The trigger seems to be an alleged internal “power-sharing deal.” According to rumours, when the current Congress government took office in May 2023, it was agreed that Siddaramaiah would serve as Chief Minister for 2.5 years after which Shivakumar would take over. Since November marks the midway of that period, loyalists are now pushing to enforce that arrangement.

What the leaders say

Siddaramaiah has publicly dismissed the speculation, calling the chatter “unnecessary debate” and asserting that his position as CM is secure. He says only the central leadership of the party can decide any change.

Shivakumar, while not openly demanding the post, has also avoided confirming or denying the pact. He says that decisions on leadership rest with the party high command and for now he remains loyal.

What’s at stake

The tussle threatens to damage the unity of Karnataka Congress. Analysts warn that if the party fails to resolve this issue quickly and clearly, it may lead to deeper factionalism and hurt its governance record and electoral prospects.

Meanwhile, some MLAs have floated alternate names, in case neither leader retains support showing that confusion and dissatisfaction run deep.

What’s next

The party high command led by Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to take a call soon, with many anticipating a decision by December 1, when Parliament session begins.

Until then, the Congress in Karnataka will remain under a cloud of uncertainty even as both camps publicly claim loyalty, internal pressure keeps mounting.
