Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal expresses deep grief over personal loss and Singhitarai plant tragedy

Mumbai: In a recent social media post, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal shared a deeply personal message reflecting on a period of profound loss and grief, both at a personal and organisational level.

“Over the past few months, I have experienced how time puts us to test.

At the very start of this year, I lost my young son. And then, earlier this month, on 14 April, the tragic accident at the Singhitarai Power Plant took away 25 of our own. I understand the pain of such untimely loss far too closely now.

Both these incidents feel deeply unnatural, filled with a kind of grief that words cannot express.

What weighs heavily on my mind is this: at our Athena plant, we had put in place the highest standards of safety. The entire responsibility was entrusted to NGSL, a partnership between NTPC and GE, among the most respected and trusted institutions in India. The contractors, the teams, the technical expertise, all were theirs. It was on the strength of this trust that we had confidently outsourced the plant’s operations and maintenance. And yet, this unfortunate tragedy occurred.

It is a lot like a vehicle owner placing his trust in a capable and responsible driver, believing that both the vehicle and its passengers will remain safe. And still, sometimes, fate intervenes.

At Vedanta, safety is always our highest priority in every contract. The same commitment has been the cornerstone for NTPC and GE as well. And when such a tragedy happens despite all of this, it truly breaks your heart.

For my son Agnivesh, and for the 25 other precious lives we have lost, I offer my deepest condolences on behalf the entire Vedanta family and me.

Some things, perhaps, are beyond our control. All affected families at the Athena Plant have received compensation, and as Chairman of Vedanta Group, I remain committed to doing everything in my capacity to support them, now and in the future.”
