Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei Dead After US-Israel Strikes

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who had led the country for more than three decades, has died at the age of 86, Iranian state media confirmed. His death was announced on 1 March 2026 following coordinated airstrikes by the United States and Israel that hit Tehran.

Who Was He?

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei was Iran’s most powerful political and religious leader since 1989. As Supreme Leader, he had final control over the military, government, and major decisions in the country. He played a central role in shaping Iran’s foreign policy, especially its confrontations with the US and Israel, and its support for allied groups across the Middle East.

How Did He Die?

Iranian state television said Khamenei was killed during the airstrike that struck his residence and leadership compound in central Tehran. The broadcast described his death as “martyrdom” and announced 40 days of national mourning throughout Iran. Reports also say several of his close associates and family members were killed in the same attack.

Before Iran confirmed the news officially, US President Donald Trump and Israeli officials had publicly stated that Khamenei was dead following the strikes.

Nationwide Reaction

  • Iran has declared 40 days of mourning and large crowds have gathered at religious sites to remember him.

  • The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) has warned of strong retaliation against US and Israeli targets.

  • International reactions vary, with some nations calling for calm and others expressing concern about further conflict.

What This Means

Khamenei’s death is a historic event for Iran and the Middle East. It creates a leadership vacuum in Iran since no clear replacement was named before the attack. The country’s future political direction is now uncertain, and experts warn that regional tensions could increase further.
