IndiGo Delhi–Manchester Flight Turns Back After 8 Hours in the Air

Passengers on an IndiGo flight from Delhi to Manchester recently had a strange travel experience. The flight took off normally. But it later returned to the same airport.

The aircraft departed from Indira Gandhi International Airport around 12:30 a.m. It was scheduled to reach Manchester in the United Kingdom in about 11 hours. However, the flight did not reach its destination.

Flight Turned Back Mid-Air

The flight, operating as 6E033, stayed in the air for almost seven to eight hours before the pilots decided to turn back.

Instead of flying over the Persian Gulf, the aircraft had already taken a longer route over Africa to avoid the conflict-affected areas in the Middle East. While flying near the border of Eritrea and Ethiopia, the plane made a U-turn and began heading back to Delhi.

By the time the aircraft landed again in Delhi at around 2:30 p.m., the total journey had lasted nearly 14 hours. Passengers ended up returning to the same airport where their journey had started.

Reason Behind the Return

According to IndiGo, the flight had to turn back because of last-minute airspace restrictions.

These restrictions were linked to the ongoing conflict and tensions in West Asia, which have affected several international flight routes. When countries suddenly close or limit their airspace, airlines cannot continue through those areas. In such cases, pilots must either divert the flight or return to the origin airport.

IndiGo said the decision was taken for safety reasons.

Challenges for Airlines

The incident also shows how difficult airline operations have become during geopolitical conflicts. Flights between Asia and Europe normally pass through important air corridors in the Middle East. When those routes are restricted, airlines must take longer paths or cancel flights.

Some airlines are now flying through Africa to avoid risky zones. But even these routes can change suddenly if new restrictions are announced.

What the Airline Said

IndiGo confirmed the incident in an official statement. The airline said the Delhi–Manchester flight had to return because airspace access changed suddenly. The company also said that due to the evolving situation in the Middle East, some flights may face diversions or longer routes.

IndiGo added that it is working with authorities to explore options to continue the journey safely.

A Long Journey That Went Nowhere

For passengers on board, the trip turned into a long and tiring experience. They spent almost half a day flying, only to return to the same airport.

The incident highlights how quickly global conflicts can affect international travel, even for flights that are thousands of kilometres away from the actual conflict zone.
