Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter was unable to land at the Taherpur helipad in West Bengal on Saturday due to extremely low visibility caused by dense fog, forcing it to return to the Kolkata airport as a safety precaution
Modi had arrived in Kolkata in the morning and boarded the chopper to travel onward to Taherpur in Nadia district, where he was scheduled to participate in an administrative programme for the launch of national highway projects and address a BJP political rally titled “Parivartan Sankalpa Sabha.”
Officials said the helicopter hovered briefly over the helipad but was unable to complete a safe landing due to poor visibility and dense fog in the area. As a result, the aircraft made a U-turn and returned to the airport.
At the time of reporting, the Prime Minister was at the Kolkata airport awaiting further weather updates. It was unclear whether he would attempt to reach Taherpur by road or wait for conditions to improve before trying another aerial approach.
Instead of attending in person, Modi later addressed the scheduled rally virtually, apologising to the crowd for not being able to reach the venue due to the weather.
