Etihad Airways cancels Abu Dhabi

Etihad Airways has cancelled its scheduled flights between Abu Dhabi (UAE) and Lisbon (Portugal) due to a nationwide strike that has disrupted transportation services in Portugal.

The airline made the decision after Portugal’s government announced a national general strike involving workers across key sectors, including public transport, airports, and ground operations. The strike has led to staff shortages and operational challenges at Lisbon Airport.

Etihad said in a statement that it had to suspend its Lisbon flights temporarily because of ongoing disruptions that could affect the safety and reliability of its services. Passengers booked on the affected flights were informed about the cancellations and offered refunds or alternative travel options on other dates.

Several travellers at Abu Dhabi International Airport reported long queues and confusion as flight statuses changed. Many passengers were advised to contact Etihad’s customer service for rebooking and compensation.

This strike follows widespread labour action in Portugal, where unions have demanded better working conditions, higher pay, and more protections amid rising living costs. Public services, including trains, buses, and airport operations, have been affected as workers joined the walkout.

Portuguese authorities have been working to keep key infrastructure running, but the scale of the strike has forced several airlines, including Etihad to take precautionary measures and adjust their schedules.

Travel experts have cautioned that such strikes can lead to delays, cancellations, and sudden itinerary changes, urging passengers to check flight statuses before arriving at the airport.

As the situation evolves, Etihad has said it will continue monitoring the strike and update passengers with new information about its Lisbon route.
