Dalai Lama Wins First Grammy at Age 90

The 14th Dalai Lama, the Tibetan spiritual leader known around the world for his message of peace and compassion, has won his very first Grammy Award at the 68th Annual Grammy Awards.

A Historic Recognition

At 90 years old, the Dalai Lama received the Grammy in the Best Audio Book, Narration and Storytelling Recording category. This award honours excellence in spoken-word projects that combine narration with artistic expression.

The Grammy was given for his work Meditations: The Reflections of His Holiness the Dalai Lama, an audiobook featuring his thoughts and teachings on themes such as compassion, peace, human connection and caring for the world.

Celebrated on His Behalf

Musician Rufus Wainwright, who collaborated on the project, accepted the award on behalf of the Dalai Lama at the Grammy ceremony. The win stood out at an event filled with musical stars and big performances.

Message of Peace and Unity

In a message after the announcement, the Dalai Lama said he received the award with “gratitude and humility.” He explained that he did not see it as a personal achievement, but as recognition of our shared responsibility as human beings to promote peace, compassion and care for the environment.

More Than Just Music

This moment is notable not just in the music world but also culturally. The Dalai Lama, already renowned worldwide for his spiritual leadership and as a Nobel Peace Prize laureate, has now ventured into a field usually reserved for artists and entertainers. The win highlights how storytelling and spoken word can carry deep meaning and influence.

A Global Reaction

The award has drawn attention around the world. Supporters say it brings spiritual and cultural messages to new audiences. However, the decision was also criticised by the Chinese government, which called the award “political manipulation” and linked it to longstanding disputes over Tibet.

In short, the Dalai Lama’s Grammy win at age 90 is historic, showing how voices of peace and reflection can be honoured alongside global musical talent.
