Mumbai : Pulses play a critical role in India’s
nutritional security, soil health, and rural livelihoods. However, pulse
farmers continue to face productivity challenges due to climatic conditions,
fragmented landholdings, persistent pest and disease pressures, and limited
access to quality seeds, underscoring the need for stronger on-ground support.
To address these challenges, on World Pulses Day,
Godrej Agrovet Limited’s Crop Protection Business undertook a farmer outreach
initiative, aimed at reaching over five lakh pulse farmers. The initiative
conducted structured training programmes on Good Agricultural Practices (GAP),
focusing on enabling informed decision-making at the farm level to support
sustainable pulse cultivation.
The training sessions covered key pulse crops such as
red gram, chana, and green gram, addressing crop-specific agronomic challenges
observed across geographies. Farmers were engaged on practical aspects
including the influence of soil and weather conditions on crop performance, fundamentals
of crop physiology, recommended farming practices, and management of major pest
challenges commonly faced during the season.
Commenting on the initiative, Rajavelu NK, CEO – Crop
Protection Business, Godrej Agrovet Limited, said: “Improving pulse
productivity requires timely access to agronomic knowledge at scale.
Strengthening farmers’ understanding of soil quality, crop physiology, and pest
dynamics can help them take timely and informed decisions, particularly amidst
continuously evolving agricultural conditions.”
Through this World Pulses Day initiative, Godrej
Agrovet engaged closely with Indian farmers to support capacity-building and
promote sustainable crop management practices, contributing to a more resilient
pulses ecosystem in the country.
