Hindustan
Zinc’s evolution into the world’s largest supplier of zinc stands as a defining
example of India’s industrial transformation driven by people, purpose, and
long-term vision. Reflecting on this journey, Vedanta Chairman Anil Agarwal
highlighted that when the company began its transformation, Hindustan Zinc was
widely viewed as “an old plant: outdated systems, slow decisions, and low
expectations,” with many believing it had limited prospects.
Despite these
perceptions, Agarwal emphasised that “one thing was never in doubt: the
people.” He emphasized the central role played by the workforce of Rajasthan,
describing them as “among the most resilient and hardworking I have known, from
a land that gave us Maharana Pratap and Mirabai.” Their “skill, pride, and
commitment,” he noted, became the foundation of the company’s turnaround.
By “staying
close to the ground, listening carefully, and trusting our people,” Hindustan
Zinc underwent a fundamental transformation. This approach enabled the creation
of over one lakh jobs and a tenfold increase in production capacity. Today, the
company contributes nearly 75 per cent of India’s zinc production. In addition,
Agarwal pointed out that “where India once produced no silver, we now produce
hundreds of tonnes annually,” marking a significant shift in the country’s
mineral production capabilities.
The company’s
economic contribution has also been substantial. According to Agarwal, “last
year alone, the company contributed nearly ₹20,000 crore to the public
exchequer,” including “₹3,600 crore in dividends to the Government of India.”
He highlighted the scale of this impact, stating, “That’s nearly ₹55 crore
every single day flowing back to the nation.”
Beyond
operational and financial milestones, Agarwal framed Hindustan Zinc’s success
as a story rooted in people and place. “Beyond the numbers, this is a story of
Rajasthan’s people and their resilience,” he said, positioning the company’s
journey as emblematic of India’s broader industrial potential.
Concluding his
reflection, Agarwal reaffirmed a forward-looking national vision, stating,
“This is our India. And there’s much more to come.”
